Although we did not devise this framework ourselves, the IDDSI is a standard recognised by carers across the globe. The framework categorises food and and drink textures and thickness, respectively, into common language and ratings so that individuals with difficulties swallowing, and their heath care professionals, can discuss and share this information with greater understanding.
Difficulties swallowing, particularly in those with dementia who may struggle to communicate this issue, can lead to weight loss, colic and even fatal choking, and may deter an individual from eating altogether, which can make it especially difficult to recognise.
The IDDSI framework hopes to combat these difficulties and improve the lives of people with difficulties swallowing, and we hope to share this professional resource with anyone who may be caring for a loved one at home.
All the information on this framework as well as a wealth of further resources regarding this topic can be found at the IDDSI.org website which we encourage you to visit.
